lòLó is a true story.

Title of Film: lòLó (pronounced Lolo)

Logline: When Nick meets the mysterious, and maybe crazy, Chas, he is plunged into a world of espionage, superstition, and murder. And some of it might be real.

Pitch: lòLó is a dark comedy, tonally in the vein of the Cohen Brothers.. It is Point Break as told by Charlie Kauffman. This is a true story so we have changed the names because “Chas” is still afraid for his life.

The story opens in Bali in 2003. “A thought is like a virus” Edgell says to his neurotic friend, Chas, as they sit in the water and wait to catch a wave. Edgell has the word lòLó tattooed on his back. Everyone calls him lòLó. They are in Bali to celebrate five years clean and sober. That night a popular nightclub is bombed by terrorists – Chas runs away and lòLó runs toward the explosion.

Our way into this story is Nick. Nick is newly sober and meets Chas at an AA meeting on the beach. Chas is a 50yr old washed up ex-champion surfer who went off-the-grid in 2003 after his best friend, lòLó, was murdered by the CIA.

Alone in the shower one night, Chas is visited by the spirit of his old friend, lòLó, who tells him that it’s time to stop hiding – Chas is to tell his story to Nicko. Nicko is dubious but agrees to go surfing and hear this tale. Chas won’t talk anywhere but out at sea where “they” can’t easily listen. Chas even makes Nicko leave his iPhone and apple watch in the truck – “you can’t be too careful”

Over the next few days, Chas tells Nicko about the last time he saw lòLó. Three months after the bombing lòLó showed up at Chas’ home in Honolulu looking homeless and injured. and the Dark forces that would stop at nothing to silence his friend. When lòLó wouldn’t back down, Chas kicked him out, and they killed him. They made it look like an overdose.

I know, what’s more likely, that lòLó relapsed in Bali and OD’d when he was rejected by his friends; or that lòLó stumbled onto a plot by the CIA to bomb the night club so that they could convince Australian and New Zealand to join the “coalition” in Iraq?? Well the Aussies and Kiwi’s did join three months later but still. And Chas is certain his friend wasn’t using.

Chas frees himself of the burden of this tale and begins to live again, Nicko is haunted by the spirits of his past and must choose to follow Chas to freedom in the realm of spirit or follow lòLó into the darkness.

What unfolds is a journey into the world of espionage, superstition, and murder. And some of it might be real.

The film has lovable but unreliable characters, Hawaiian folklore, surfing and an energetic story line with a great twist ending.
